A PDF map is a static map you can open up with your browser, print as is, or save to your hard drive.
You will see a collection of maps that have been prepared to satisfy certain themes, such as street maps, city tax maps (as you would see at the county registry of deeds). These maps are not interactive, you can only print as it was prepared. They are not searchable in any way, but are prepared to print to a specific pre-defined scale with layers, legend, north arrow, indexes, or other information for your convenience. These PDF maps are saved in a common Portable Document Format (Adobe). To read PDFs, you will need to Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is likely you already have this on your computer, but in case you don’t, you can download it for free at http://get.adobe.com/reader/
