Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Resolve, Vision Statement, & Mission Statement

Melissa Hue is the City of Lewiston's first-ever Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), coming on board in August 2021. The position was one of the main recommendations from Mayor Mark Cayer's Ad Hoc Equity & Diversity Committee that was established in 2020. The position recommendation was charged with developing a city workforce representative of the demographics of the city; advancing equitable policies, training, practices and procedures; and ensuring that the city delivers services in an equitable and inclusive manner.

Hue has been a social justice advocate for many years. As a first generation immigrant from North Carolina, she attributes her passion for DEI work to her lived experience. Her primary focus has been creating and re-structuring policies to become equitable and inclusive for all in hopes of providing impactful systemic changes for marginalized communities.

Hue is a graduate of the University of New England where she earned a Bachelors in Medical Biology and a Masters in Public Health. She previously served seven years in healthcare, including three at MaineHealth where she worked on accessibility to healthcare for vulnerable and marginalized communities. While there, she became MaineHealth’s DEI ambassador as well as a co-chair of the organization’s BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) Care Team Network.
