The City of Lewiston stands proudly with the LGBTQ community in celebraton of Pride Month. By recognizing the importance of love, we want to acknowledge the sacrifices made by so many in honor of acceptance, liberation, and equality. To those who have sacrificed their lives, families and stability to live their authentic truth, we are proud of you. To those who have stood in solidarity, allyship, and protection, we support you. To those who have been advocates, activists, and leaders, we salute you.
The Stonewall Riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. June 28,1969, sparked a moment where the right to love freely meant more than the freedom to live quietly. LGBTQ communities suffered at the hands of persecution, ostracization, violence, and intolerance. For six days, countless heroes paved the way for progress and change. However, the work continues. Love is love encompasses the simplicity of what we as a community can create, a space of inclusivity where people can love strongly, fiercely, and freely.
To our LGBTQ+ community, the City of Lewiston stands with you.
